I came across Purl Soho by accident, as you do when you spend way too much time on the internet looking for stuff. I can't remember when it was but maybe 3-4 years ago. I first got excited about a pattern they had for a dressing gown as mine was falling apart so I ordered it in hard copy form from their shop in NY. Here it is:
I even went and bought fabric to make it but, shame on me, I still haven't done it!
That started my love affair with Purl Soho. I think I must go on their site every day now as I constantly find great knitting, sewing and crochet patterns but also I find it hugely inspirational for a lot of reasons:
The only thing I don't like is that they're in New York and not in the UK or Europe. I dream of catching a plane and going over there just to spend a few days in the shop with them. Seriously.
I highly recommend that you check out their website as you can find simple knitting patterns for beginners right up to really advanced ideas. At the very least it will fill you with inspiration. Some of the products are pricey but you can substitute your own yarns if you can afford theirs (I notice yarns are a lot more expensive in the US than in Europe, generally speaking)
Whatever you do, spend some time on their site and get to know it. It's a great source of information and ideas and it's just gorgeous.
Let me know what you think and if you've used their patterns before.

1. They give away great stuff FREE. (This is one of the free patterns for beginners)
2. Their website is just plain BEAUTIFUL
3. Their ideas are INSPIRATIONAL (This is one of my favourite patterns)
4. They have top quality PRODUCTS (This is the kit for the shawl above)
5. They keep it SIMPLE
